Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How will I afford/pay for off-campus housing?

A: Niner Finances provides guidance for financial success as well as programming, resources, education, etc. Their website has a ton of great information on it that can help you determine what you can afford (realistically so you can live comfortably), help you establish a budget, etc. In particular, they have a "Moving Off-Campus: What You Need to Know" article published on their website that includes an Off-Campus Housing Worksheet.

Niner Central is a single location for you to go for services related to financial aid and billing, registration, transcripts, student accounts, academic records, and more, and is an excellent resource for you as you consider the affordability of off-campus housing and have questions about if/how to apply your financial aid to off-campus housing costs.

Q: Can I still purchase a meal plan?

A: Auxiliary Services offers meal plans to commuters. Commuters and upper-class residents assigned to non-required housing may purchase any meal plan, including any Straight Declining Balance Plan.

Q: What is the process of finding a roommate?

A: Once you have navigated to the Off-Campus website, select "Roommates" (located at the top of the page), sign in with your NinerNet ID (you may need to insert some additional information), and then you will be able to search through and connect with other UNC Charlotte students also looking for roommates. Creating a profile will help you find a roommate. This tool has a great search engine, so please feel free to utilize those search options. Once you have found a roommate, you should reach out to the property of choice, apply, and request to have you two in the same unit.

Q: What are my rights as a tenant?

A: Student Legal Services (SLS) offers legal advice, information, resources, and referrals for students in several areas of North Carolina law, including (but not limited to) landlord-tenant and has excellent resources, including Basic Tenant Rights in North Carolina and Important Steps for Renters in North Carolina, available on their website.

Q: What campus resources may I use as an off-campus student?

A: As a student, all campus resources are available to you. Please visit the Resources section for more information about some of the resources that are available
